Destinations: Germany

Germany’s currency is the Euro (€), which is the official currency of the country. The Euro replaced the Deutsche Mark (DM), Germany’s previous currency, on January 1, 2002. The transition to the Euro was part of a broader effort to unify the economies of European Union (EU) member states and create a single currency for the region.

The Euro is divided into 100 cents, and it is one of the most widely used currencies in the world, not just in Germany but across 19 of the 27 EU member countries that make up the Eurozone. The Euro is issued by the European Central Bank (ECB) and the national central banks of the Eurozone countries, with Germany’s central bank, the Bundesbank, playing an important role in its management.

Before the adoption of the Euro, Germany used the Deutsche Mark, which had been the currency since 1948, and was seen as a symbol of the country’s post-war economic recovery. The shift to the Euro was a significant step in European integration, and the currency continues to be a key part of Germany’s economic stability and global trade.
